Gar Rune

(From the Anglo-Saxon runes variation)

Today I’m gonna talk about Gar, another of the runes that are only found within the Futhorc, the Anglo-Saxon runic variant.

Ger means "spear", and is associated with Gungnir, the spear of Woden (the Saxon variant of Odin).

As many already know, it was with this spear that Odin (Woden) sacrificed himself to later hang himself on the Yggdrasil, and in this way obtain the vision and wisdom of the runes. It’s also the spear with which Odin points out those who must die in battle. With the other hand he also uses it to heal the wounded, and works his magic with it.

This indicates that the energy of this rune is associated with the wisdom that reveals the secrets and mysteries of the worlds and the highest power of magic. This magic is even capable of influencing life and death.

Every spear needs to be aimed so that it can exert its power, and thus another of the concepts that this rune transmits is to aim and to focus. Odin's spear never misses its target. The spear is the instrument that indicates direction and focuses attention on the target.

So, by accurately pointing the spear and directing it correctly, it will be able to transmit all its power towards our objective in an effective way, ensuring success in the result.

Gar also transmits the notion of organization and of order. Organization in our own ideas, and order in our actions, focused on a clear objective. And of course, a spear will always convey a sense of authority.

How can we use Gar's energy in a practical way?

  1. When we feel scattered, working with the Gar rune, by itself, will help us regain our concentration, or enhance it. To regain our attention to our real objectives or to what is truly important, to regain our focus.
  2. When we have many ideas in chaos in our head, Gar can help us prioritize these ideas, order them and give them structure.
  3. When we need to reach positions of power. In these cases it can also be used in combination with Yr rune, that was described in the previous article.
  4. In bindrunes, it can be used to increase the Magic and their power, and in turn ensure that the Magic contained in the bindrune "points well" to its target.
  5. To facilitate the learning of new knowledge. In these cases it can be used in combination with Ansuz.
  6. Of course, it can be used together with other Runes such as Ansuz and Othala in the representations of Odin, especially if the image was in its Anglo-Saxon version (Woden).
  7. In bindruns dedicated to healing, Gar would be an important rune to include.
