If you've done any amount of runework, you're likely already familiar with Algiz. Algiz may just be the most commonly used rune in rituals and bindrunes, because of its protective energy. It's a great rune to use for any sort of protection spell, and it tends to fit beautifully into any bindrune. As well as protecting you from harm, Algiz can also grant you a safe haven in which to do any sort of inner work or growth. It also has strong ties to the gods, and is often used for strengthening your spiritual connection. In a literal sense, Algiz represents either Pinewoods overhead, or Elk antlers. This is why it makes the most sense to add Algiz to the top of a bindrune, rather than the middle or bottom. The outstretched antlers or branches act as a protective umbrella over the other runes below.
For today's post, I felt it made the most sense to show you how to use Algiz in different bindrunes, to offer different kinds of protection or save haven. But keep in mind, the possibilities are endless! The examples I give in this post are only a few of the many protective bindrunes and staves you can build onto this universal rune.
1. Home & Family Protection Bindrune

This bindrune uses the protective power of Algiz layered over Othala, the rune of Home and Hearth. Othala also represents the ancestral line, familial ties, and estate. Carve or draw this bindrune onto your front door to keep out unfriendly spirits. Alternatively, keep it in the most-used room in the house, to offer shelter to those who spent time there.
2. Internal Refuge Bindrune

This is the perfect bindrune to use when you need to focus inward. Carve or draw this on the journal you use for your most inner thoughts. Gently trace this bindrune on your forehand with a finger when you need refuge for your mind. This can be a powerful tool for meditation or shadow work. The combined power of Algiz with Mannaz (humanity, self) lends refuge to safely dive into the big question, "What makes us human?"
3. Relationship Sanctuary Bindrune

The rune Ehwaz, nestled safely under Algiz, represents partnership and compatibility. Literally, it refers to the horse and the rider. This bindrune can provide a safe space to hone in on the obstacles surrounding your relationship with a loved one. Place this bindrune nearby when the two of you sit down for a heavy discussion. Carve it on the cover of a journal, then use that journal to take notes during couples therapy. Use it as a meditation tool when figuring out the best way to respond to a hurtful message. Even the strongest relationships have turbulent times, and it's important to set aside a safe space for the act of healing.
4. Safe Travels Bindrune

Algiz and Raidho come together to make the perfect bindrune for safe travels on a long journey. Raidho can represent any different kind of travel, as well as a spiritual or emotional journey. Combining this bindrune with either of the previous bindrunes can make a powerful protective spell for an emotional journey. Or, simply adorn your vehicle with this bindrune to carry the gods with you while travelling.
5. Layered Algiz

If you aren't sure exactly what runes to bind with Algiz to get your desired protection spell, try just layering Algiz itself! This is a powerful, universal protection stave, and it's actually one of the most common bindrune carvings I've seen in my research of ancient pre-Viking Age Runestones. Layered Algiz brings to mind the many branches of a Pine tree, or the tines of an Elk's antlers.
I hope you enjoyed this week's Inner Circle entry! This is the fourth post of The Rune Series, in which I explore each rune, their meanings, and their applications. Do you have a favorite rune that you want me to explore? Or maybe you have a suggestion for an entirely different subject for next week's post? Let me know in the comments below!
Holiday blessings,
